I was feeling really depressed tonight. When I say “really depressed” it means depressed enough to wish that I could leave this life. But I have children who love me and whose development would be severely impacted by such a thing. There is no great tragedy in my life these […]
I am feeling very depressed today. I have been in bed for the last three days. It feels like someone sucked all of the joy out of me. Most things I try to do, the techniques I know that can help, seem too hard to do right now. Notice that […]
Here are two videos “How To Deal With Depression” and “How to Stop Feeling Depressed” by a Noah Elkrief. I could summarize the videos for you but I believe that would be a disservice because it would sabotage their purpose which is to help you to experientially know what he […]
“Get something from it! You’re already in pain. Us it! Do something with it! Allow it to take you to the next level! Allow you pain to take you to the next level!” That’s why it’s there, to take you to the next level.
“Recycle your pain.”
Get back up again, and again, and again, and again. I did it every day several times a day for years. I still do it. Get back up again!!!
There is a lethargy, a true draining of vital life energy that prevents people with Depression from doing what they have to do for themselves. When I am in the pit of depression I sometimes feel like I can’t go downstairs and get something to eat. Often times I don’t and I go hungry. I can’t pick out my clothes. It’s just too hard. So I ware what I wore yesterday that I threw on the floor next to my bed. Sometimes I think that if the house caught fire I wouldn’t have the strength to get out. That’s how brutal Depression can be. It’s not living. It’s just existing. That’s not how life has to be.
I have found moments of strength when someone else was in need. In certain emergencies I’d rise to the occasion and crash after it did what needed to be done. In my sadness and longing to die I have counseled others back from the brink, and they had no idea how much pain I was in because I did not let them know. I was there for them and that gave me some sense of worth. Sometimes it even made me happy. The following video illustrates the power of service, the power of helping others even when you can’t help yourself. If you keep on doing it, little by little you will come alive again.
The following video is a mantra (sound) based meditation technique called the Release Meditation Technique by Brendon Burchard. It is practiced by listening to a particular soundtrack and chanting a particular mantra (sound) which is the word “Release”. In similar fashion to Transcendential Meditation (TM) the mantra can be chanted aloud getting softer and softer until the mantra is only repeated silently in the mind. But Unlike TM in which one is assigned one’s own personal mantra upon initiation, this mantra “Release” used by all who practice this meditation. I found the music to be extremely relaxing and conducive to getting into a meditative state, and it would probably work wonderfully with any other mantra that one might wish to use. You can download the background soundtrack for free from iTunes or SoundCloud.

I have been depressed. I’ve been pushing myself to go out, to answer the phone, to shower, to read, to meditate, to walk, to stay engaged somehow. I will not complain. Complaining is useless. I’ve been using the tools I have written about in this blog and other that I haven’t written about yet. So for now watch this:
“It aint about how hared you can get hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep getting back up.”
“Get up, but don’t ever give up”
“We can stay here and get the shit kicked out of us, or we can fight out way back into the light. We can clime out of hell, one inch at a time” “The inches that you need are all around you.”
“To cry to give up; cry to keep going!” Don’t cry to quit. You already in pain. You already hurt. Go out and get a reward for it!”
“Cause everyday is a new day; every moment is a new moment!”
“Now, what are you going to do?”
“Now I’m going to show you how great I am!”
Limits, just like fears are often an illusion.
Brother David says “If you want to be happy, be grateful” and then he tells us how: STOP-LOOK-GO!
“Every moment is a new gift, over and over again, and if you miss the opportunity of this moment, another moment is given to us, and another moment. We can avail ourselves of this opportunity, or we can miss it, and if we avail ourselves of the opportunity, it is the key to happiness. Behold the master key to our happiness in our own hands. Moment by moment…
Does that mean that we can be grateful for everything? Certainly not. We cannot be grateful for violence, for war, for oppression, for exploitation. On the personal level, we cannot be grateful for the loss of a friend, for unfaithfulness, for bereavement. But I didn’t say we can be grateful for everything. I said we can be grateful in every given moment for the opportunity, and even when we are confronted with something that is terribly difficult, we can rise to this occasion and respond to the opportunity that is given to us. It isn’t as bad as it might seem. Actually, when you look at it and experience it, you find that most of the time, what is given to us is opportunity to enjoy, and we only miss it because we are rushing through life and we are not stopping to see the opportunity.” – Brother David Steindl-Rast
I’ve been working on multiple entries all at once over the last few days. That’s an ADD thing you know. So I have several things in the almost done column. For now check out the Breaking Depression Youtube Channel that I set up. There are numerous playlists on various subjects and I will be expanding this on a regular basis.
I hope you like the videos!
I did not know whether to call this “When I Have a Bad Day” or “When You Have a Bad Day”, but the title I chose to use tells you something. If you are where I was then you may feel that every day is a bad day. Indeed, for many years of my life, just about every day was a bad day. But now the title is “When I Have a Bad Day”, which infers that I must be having good days and it does. I have gone from “bad life” to “better life”. I have gone from “bad life” to “bad days”. I prayed to God for an end to my pain and suffering and I was answered. I am grateful for God’s answer to my plea. But I want more good days and I expect more good days.
Today was not a good day. Despite major improvements in my biochemistry and spiritual well-being, I am still in a life of strife. And strife seems to stick to me like flies to flypaper. Life has not been kind to me. I am immensely grateful for health and well-being of my wife and children. There are many millions of people out there who are living through so much poverty, violence, and physical diseases that I am sparred from enduring. But I still have situations that are not wrapped up. I still have a lot to improve upon in my life. I am still under duress mostly due to external factors as opposed to constant depression. But I do get depressed on bad days. And that depression seems to run straight toward the worst mental place to go. Luckily, it abates. Yours will abate too.
I do not dwell upon the notion of future bad days, but I do expect to have them, like all people do. But because I have Depression I have to take proactive action. I have to be prepared for bad days so I can try to prevent them from becoming torturous days. And I can’t always avoid that either. In Recovery International one of the spottings says “Expect frustration and disappointment every minute of the day and you won’t be disappointed.” Another one is: “I have the ability to withstand torture.” It’s true! We all do. Read Man’s Search for Meaning and you will see. It’s not a feel good book. I will go into Victor Frankl‘s Logotherapy in another post on a better day. There is much to be learned from it.
In the meantime take a look at this video:
I just saw this video (P&G Olympic Sponsor Spot) that I found very inspiring and very comforting. So I had to jump out of bed to post it.
When we were children we took a lot of hard knocks, but we didn’t see it that way. We never felt that the world was against us way back then when we were around age 5 or less. We never said to ourselves, “Why is this happening to me? Why am I falling down? Why am I getting hurt?” It was just part of the process. It was part of the fun. It was just part of the game. Life was the game. And life still is the game. We’ve just forgotten that it’s a game.
The falls, the bruises, the injuries, the “failures” – none of that bothered us. We didn’t care what anyone else thought of us. We were just living – really living!
Right now, let`s remind ourselves that the child within each of us still lives and still wants to play! “We take our own dear selves too seriously” (RI) Let’s get back in the game!
Our minds are currently being assaulted and abused by all sorts of mental chatter. Most people are scared to meditate because they are afraid of stopping their constant action of distraction that they think serves to not let the thoughts effect them. What they don’t realize is that these thoughts […]
