How to Break Your Depressed State of Mind

I am no scientist, doctor, or scholar.  But I have suffered for over 25 years from Depression and I am a student of it.  I look for any and every way to Break Depression as long as it hurts no one.  When people talk of Heaven and Hell I tell them that I have lived in Hell for many many years and Hell is not a place, it is a state of mind.

I recently read that our state of mind changes approximately every 90 seconds.   To me this is wonderful news!   To mean this means that approximately every 90 seconds we have an extra opportunity to break out of a depressed state of mind.  We might not Break Depression the illness, but we might break depression – the state of mind.

I have been studying Ericksonian Hypnosis which involves altered states of consciousness (trance) and the use of metaphors and language patterns to create change.  NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) owes much from what it has learned and modeled from Dr. Milton Erickson and I am studying that too.  In NLP there is documented proof that when we think in certain ways our eyes move in certain directions.  I’m not going to get into this much right now except to tell you this:  Yesterday I WAS ABLE TO BREAK OUT OF A DEPRESSED STATE OF MIND.  I was able to break out of an angry state of mind and a depressed state of mind by simply looking up and to my right and imagining pink clouds and rainbows.  It was a very happy moment because it made me feel like I finally had found some control over my depression.  It worked within seconds and it stayed with me for a couple of hours!

I tried it out as a result of reading about eye accessing cues that are described in NLP.  It would not surprise me in the least if EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is commonly used for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) derived at least partially from NLP.  All I know is that I thought that I might be able to change my state of mind with my eyes and a little imagination and I did!  Is it a cure for Depression?  No.  Is it a possible tool for relief?  I think so!  You’ll have to give it a try and let me know what happens.  There are probably several more ways to break the depression state of mind, or “break state” for short using your eyes in other ways and also using other sensory parts of the body.  But for now give this a shot:

If you are right handed then you should try to break state by looking up and to the right while using your imagination to construct something simple, colorful, and new – like a pink elephant, a castle in the sky, a dragon, a rainbow, whatever.  It really doesn’t matter what you imagine as long as you can see it in your minds eye as something new, as opposed to a memory of something, and that it is benign image.  The more colorful the better.  Look up and to your right and imagine this image and hold your eyes there for 15 seconds or more.  See what happens.  Do it several times.  Try it for different periods of time.  Play with it for various emotional states of mind that you want to break like anger or anxiety.

Now if you are left handed you have to see if you will need to look up and to your right or up and to your left.  You do this by looking up and to the left and see if you can imagine something pleasant that you can construct as opposed to remember.  If you cannot picture something that is your own new creation and not a memory then up and to the left is where you will point your eyes.  If you find it hard to imagine a new image with your eyes up and to the left then try up and to the right.  Once you find the side which works for you that is the side that you always use.  It does not change for you.  If up and to the left doesn’t work then try up and to the right.  Find out which side works for you and stick with it.  The important thing to remember is that which ever side works is the one that will always work.  After your first experiment you do not have to do this part anymore.  You will just always use the side that you were able to visualize something new that you constructed in your imagination.  For right handed persons it is almost always as I said, up and to the right.  You lefties have to see if it is reversed for you or not.  It will vary among individuals.

So there you have it.  Break depression, the state of mind of depression by looking up and to the side as I said above and imagine something that you constructed in your mind that is pleasant and colorful.  Any reprieve from depression is worth it.  Any sense of an ability to control your state of mind is a very powerful and liberating feeling.  There is cause for optimism.  This is just the start.  Keep it up.  Spend less time in hell and more time with you friends or family.  And try it for other negative moods like anger or worry as well and let me know how you do.

Happy imaginings!
